Leo Putz' Brasilian Lady

Leo Putz has painted this pictures during his time in South America. Interestingly, his style changed during this time and he got much brighter colors and expierenced a much wider oevre. This painting is considered as one of his master pieces. It has been painted at the last day of the year 1929. To me, when I first have seen this picture it looked like a Gauguin. There are the colors of it and there is the motif: the lady which we don't know who she is, sitting in a chair looking at us. She is about to start a conversation. She is wearing a fancy dress of this time and the yellow dress gives us a more deeper impression of the dark color of her body.

After his time in Brasil, Leo Putz returned to Germany, Munich, where in a nearby village (Gauting) he has rented a house. He organized an exhibition of his South American paintings in Munich. However, this exhibition has started at a time when the Nazi regime already has ruled Germany. These people didn't want to see other pictures that German heros and they didn't want to see colored people. Since the pictures of Leo Putz have shown colored people as normal persons playing together, dancing and working, the Nazi party did close the exhibition. After this event Leo Putz decided to leave Germany.
